Brunswick Hospital Authority Expects Crowd at Meeting

Posted on: Thursday, 1 December 2005, 21:00 CST

Dec. 1--SHALLOTTE, N.C. - Pete Barnette expects there could be an overflow crowd today when three companies tell the Brunswick County Hospital Authority why they would be best as the new lessee of Brunswick Community Hospital.

If there are more people than the health department's boardroom can hold, the meeting will be moved to the county commissioners chambers in a nearby building, said Barnette, authority chairman.

A large turnout would be unique so far in the process of replacing the Hospital Corporation of North Carolina. Barnette and others are surprised there has not been much public input.

"I'm wanting to say it's because they're confident the team is doing what we're supposed to do," Barnette said.

The job of finding a new lessee began after doctors in June said HCNC should be declared in default of its 40-year lease for failure to construct a state-approved, 30-bed addition at the hospital in Supply.

Proposals to lease the hospital, which were received Nov. 14, came from Community Health Systems, Essent Healthcare and Novant Health. Carolinas HealthCare System submitted a proposal to manage the hospital, but it was not invited to make a presentation today because its proposal did not meet the requirements of the authority.

The Carolinas proposal has not been totally eliminated. Barnette said it could become active if none of the other three is acceptable to the author- ity.

The authority was seeking a new lessee willing to pay HCNC $23 million and build the 30-bed addition, estimated to cost $34 million.

Barnette said he expects a number of hospital employees, physicians, hospital trustees and county commissioners at the presentations.

A public hearing will follow the presentations.
