Posted on: Friday, 2 December 2005, 12:00 CST

NEW YORK, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation was recognized for ten years of caregiver support on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at this year's 21st Annual Mayoral Conference on Alzheimer's disease at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Caregiver's "Taking Charge!" was the theme of the conference, which spoke to the importance of caregivers taking steps to ensure their own health and well- being so that they and their care receiver have an optimum quality of life. There are approximately 27 million caregivers across the country today, many of which provide treatment for memory impaired loved ones. There are an estimated 200,000 New Yorkers who suffer from Alzheimer's disease. The conference took place in November to coincide with National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month.

"This is such an important event for caregivers, whose emotional heartbreak is overwhelming as their loved ones descend into complete dependence on them," said Mary Asta, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Fisher Center Foundation. "The conference offers them a place to gather much needed information and skills from the leading experts in the field of Alzheimer's care to make their lives just a bit easier. We welcome this opportunity to share with them the hope that our research accomplishments in the cause, care and cure of Alzheimer's disease have brought to the field as we celebrate our 10th anniversary."

The conference covered subjects like "Understanding Alzheimer's and a Legal Financial Overview," Medications for Alzheimer's disease and "Nutrition and Alzheimer's Disease." A wide variety of workshops held throughout the day provided caregivers with hands-on tips and training. Attendees had the opportunity to learn first hand from leading experts such as Dr. William Netzer, Associate Researcher at the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research, and Dr. Barry Reisberg, author of the "Namenda study" and Director of the Fisher Program at NYU School of Medicine. Other notable speakers included Dr. Mary Mittelman, also of NYU as well as many others in the healthcare and social service communities of New York.

The theme for the luncheon plenary celebrated the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation's 10th Anniversary. The Foundation supports The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research, the world's leading research facility for Alzheimer's, located at Rockefeller University, and headed by Nobel laureate Dr. Paul Greengard. WB11's Marvin Scott emceed the production and Dr. Netzer updated the attendees on the progress in Alzheimer's research. MetLife Foundation's Barbara Dillon spoke about the Fisher Center Foundation's upcoming program entitled "Keeping Your Mind Sharp," an educational seminar focusing on techniques to improve age-related memory loss. The intent of the course, Ms. Dillon informed the crowded luncheon, will be to encourage participants to maintain healthy lifestyle regimes, allay unnecessary anxiety about age-related memory loss and enable self-identification of Alzheimer's disease. The plenary ended with Broadway star, Rena Strober, singing songs from Les Miserables and Chicago.
