A study conducted by researchers from Applied Health Outcomes assessing the "Economic Impact of Anesthetist-Administered Sedation in Outpatient Gastrointestinal Endoscopy" was awarded one of five Governors Awards for Excellence in Clinical Research at the American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) 2005 Annual Scientific Meeting held in late October.
Results from the study, presented by Thomas J. Bramley, PhD, indicate that anesthetist-administered sedation in gastrointestinal endoscopy results in a significant economic burden to the U.S. healthcare system. The research found that this burden is likely to increase due to population growth, potential increases in colorectal cancer screening and the increased use of propofol. According to the study, nearly every gastrointestinal endoscopic procedure performed (92 percent) is associated with propofol sedation administered by an anesthesiologist or a certified nurse anesthetist (CRNA). The anesthetist costs associated with these procedures are projected to range from $1.3 to $1.4 billion in 2005, most influenced by anesthetist professional fees and the percent of procedures using propofol sedation. As the dynamics of reimbursement change frequently, further research is warranted to determine the entities financially responsible for this burden.
