Dec. 7--Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital officials will celebrate the opening of a $62 million, 100-bed heart hospital today.
The Harris Methodist Heart Center, built on the campus of Harris Methodist Fort Worth, is the only Tarrant County hospital dedicated solely to cardiac care.
"The new technology in the heart center represents the difference between a 27-inch TV and a flat-screen high-definition TV," said Dr. Robert Meidell, medical director of cardiovascular services at Harris Methodist Fort Worth.
The five-floor heart center has four state-of-the-art surgery suites and four catheterization labs. Fifty of its 100 beds are dedicated to intensive care. Other amenities include a reference library that's open to the public, a heart-healthy bistro and a meditation garden.
The hospital was built to accommodate the 40 percent growth in cardiac services that Harris Methodist Fort Worth has seen since 1998 and the 14 percent increase it projects over the next five years, Dr. Meidell said.
Heart center officials said the hospital will begin providing diagnostic services later this month and admitting patients on Jan. 10.
Heart disease ranks as the leading cause of death among North Texas residents, according to the American Heart Association.
Harris Methodist Fort Worth is a member of Arlington-based Texas Health Resources.
