Many needy local children will be riding new bikes this Christmas thanks to the Jim Franklin Department of Public Safety Association Bikes for Tykes program.
The program is purchasing 500 bikes from local Wal-Mart stores for the children.
Firefighters and police from Rio Rancho and Albuquerque picked up 150 of the bikes on Tuesday from the Wal-Mart on Coors near Cottonwood Mall, according to Sgt. Peter Camacho, community relations with the Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety.
Another 180 bikes have been purchased from other Wal-Mart stores.
Money for the bikes was raised during the "Rumble in Rio" boxing event Oct. 29 at Santa Ana Casino.
About 30 firefighters, police and corrections officers from several departments across New Mexico participated in the boxing matches.
More than $36,000 was raised through event ticket sales.
"Kids of Sandoval County, Bernalillo County and Santa Ana Pueblo will reap the benefits of this program," Camacho said.
Bikes will be distributed on Dec. 17 at Sam's Club near Cottonwood Mall.
The program finds children in need through a number of outlets, including domestic shelters, and works with foster kids and the state Children, Youth and Families Department.
Camacho said the program works with families of incarcerated persons "so kids can see law enforcement officers and fire department personnel in a positive light."
In addition, the program works with Albuquerque Public Schools and Rio Rancho Public Schools to find children in need of bikes, he said.
Camacho said the program will continue to take calls through Friday for children in need of a bike.
Call 891-5902 to add a needy child to the bike distribution list.
