Cancer Vaccine on Way

Posted on: Monday, 12 December 2005, 09:00 CST

A DRUGS firm will today take the first step towards licensing a controversial vaccine for cervical cancer.

It is hoped Gardasil will save 1,100 women in the UK each year and 470,000 worldwide.

The vaccine is designed to protect against two strains of the human papilloma virus which trigger 70 per cent of cervical cancers.

During trials it was 100 per cent effective at preventing the killer disease.

Drugs company Sanofi Pasteur MSD is applying for a licence to market Gardasil in Europe.

Nick Kitchin, the firm's medical director, said: "Hopefully, this is a milestone step on the path to protect future generations against cervical cancer."

But, as the vaccine will be offered to young girls, some critics claim it could encourage under-age sex.
