In an effort to support clients participating in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) 100,000 Lives Campaign, Cerner Corp. (NASDAQ: CERN) announces its commitment to provide the necessary tools to monitor and capture vital information from hospitals and health networks.
The Campaign, launched in December 2004, has enlisted more than 2,900 of the estimated 5,000 acute-care hospitals in the nation. All participating hospitals agree to submit monthly data on mortality and inpatient acute care, with the specific aim of reducing mortality by June 2006. IHI uses the data to track the Campaign's progress.
"We are convinced that with only a few proven interventions implemented on a wide scale, the nation's hospitals could avoid 100,000 deaths in 18 months, and every year thereafter," said Dr. Donald Berwick, IHI's president and chief executive officer. "The participating hospitals working with Cerner have an efficient way to monitor their information and report it in a timely manner."
IHI is focusing the 100,000 Lives Campaign on system improvements to hospitals based on evidence, and strives to make error prevention part of every day practice for hospitals and care networks. Cerner's dedication to technology that offers information-rich, person-centric care matches the core components of the Campaign.
"By providing technology that allows for instant data capture, Cerner is helping to create a healthcare model that strives to eliminate error," said Bill Dwyer, Cerner senior vice president. "We are thrilled to take part in the 100,000 Lives Campaign as a data intermediary and supporter of initiatives for the greater good of public health. We are proud of our technology's ability to help provide strategic direction for hospitals."
The Campaign safely and securely collects two sets of data from participating hospitals with the goal of increasing the quality of care. The first examines information such as a hospital's number of licensed beds, teaching status and average daily census. The second focuses on monthly inpatient mortality data, including the number of inpatient deaths and discharges. As the information is compiled, areas for improvement are targeted.
The 100,000 Lives Campaign supports the delivery of evidence-based care, medication reconciliation and science-based methods to prevent central line infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia and surgical site infections.
Cerner Corp. is taking the paper chart out of healthcare, eliminating error, variance and waste in the care process. With more than 1,500 clients worldwide, Cerner is the leading supplier of healthcare information technology. The following are trademarks of Cerner: Cerner, Cerner's logo.
