Irish Daily Mirror Comment: Hospital Bed Plan Welcome
December 19, 2005
BRENDAN Drumm’s bid to get people out of hospital quicker is certain to spark controversy.
He maintains Irish patients spend longer in hospital beds than most other countries with similar health services.
His plans to steer our troubled service into calmer waters should be listened to.
Professor Drumm is right when he says hospitals should be a last resort for the sick and elderly – and that we must get people out quickly while ensuring they receive the best possible care.
One of the major thorns in the side of the service in recent years has been the crippling pressure on beds.
Anything that can address that issue is welcome.
