ALL adults aged over 40 should be screened for heart disease even if there is no family history of heart attack or stroke, guidelines will say today.
Adults under 40 should be screened if there is a history of developing hardened and narrowed arteries earlier than expected.
The guidelines, backed by six heart and stroke societies, are published in specialist magazine Heart.
The new criteria greatly increase the number of people needing to be screened.
Prof David Woods, lead author of the guidelines, said: "The promise of preventive cardiology is to reduce the risk of having a heart attack or stroke."
Meanwhile, death rates for heart disease and strokes between 2003 and 2004 have fallen by eight per cent and 12 per cent respectively, official figures showed yesterday.
