Influenza, which is a respiratory illness, does not respond to antibiotics. There are antiviral medications that reduce symptom severity and duration, but they must be given within a day or two of the flu’s onset.
Otherwise, treatment is comfort care for symptoms and patience until the bug runs its course, as well as effort to avoid spreading it to others.
