Dec. 26--Police believe the same driver is responsible for two hit-and-run accidents Saturday afternoon. David Serra Sandaval was charged with felony hit and run, felony possession of cocaine, driving while impaired, and driving without a license. His blood alcohol level registered .15 on a breath test. The legal limit for driving in North Carolina is .08.
Officers said the driver of a Toyota Tacoma reported that around 4:15 p.m. a Chevrolet Suburban that was behind him on Graham-Hopedale Road revved its engine and intentionally rammed his truck. There were no injuries in that wreck and only minor damage to the truck. The Suburban drove off. Police were told to look out for the Suburban, but none had found it. Within a few minutes officers were called to another wreck at the intersection of North Main Street and Rolling Road. There, a Suburban had driven through a stop sign at 35 mph. Maria Wright Livesay was driving her 1999 Mazda through the intersection and crashed into the Suburban. The Suburban spun and hit a utility pole. Livesay and a teenage passenger were taken to the hospital. Their injuries were not lifethreatening. Damage to each car was estimated around $5,000. The driver of the Suburban and his passenger jumped from the SUV and ran. Within five minutes police found Sandaval lying down in nearby woods. The Suburban belongs to a Texas man, and police say the SUV does not appear to be insured. Kadi Hodges can be reached at kadi_hodges@link.freedom.com
