Clinics Offer Residents Free Medical Treatment
By Kirsten J. Barnes, Montgomery Advertiser, Ala.
Dec. 27–Montgomery residents are being offered free medical treatment once a month through clinics offered through the Community Care Network.
The network will offer its third monthly clinic at the Newtown Community Center on Jan. 4. A location for a second monthly clinic is being reviewed, but the location hasn’t been determined.
The network targeted Newtown to kick off its services after identifying a high number of indigent and uninsured patients living there, said Dr. Leon Davis, the network’s founder.
“I think it’s going well,” Davis said. “It’s really an introduction and getting to know what we need to do to get the word out.”
The network’s mission is to provide quality health care and health-care screening to the uninsured and underinsured. It recently was awarded a Community Development Block Grant of $123,733 to hold two monthly clinics.
“With these clinics you want to go where the people are,” said Deloise Jones, a nurse with the network.
The grant, which is administered by the city of Montgomery, also allows the organization to expand the services provided at these clinics and hire additional staff.
During the clinics, the network can treat 25 to 30 patients or conduct about 300 screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes.
In addition to the clinics, the network provides five-hour clinics in Moses and White Hall, both in Lowndes County.
They network conducts health fairs throughout Montgomery and the Black Belt counties on Saturdays.
Joann Walker of Montgomery visited the mobile unit to get relief from a cold.
“My neighbor told me about it,” said Walker, adding she was pleased with the care.
