Births set another record in fast-growing DeSoto County in 2004.

The county had 1,978 resident births during the year, according to state Department of Health statistics. The previous high was 1,839 in 2003, which had surpassed 1,815 recorded in 2000.

In 1995, the total was 1,229.

As the population grows, deaths also are increasing in the county. The 872 deaths in 2004 were an apparent modern record surpassing the previous high of 867 in 2003.

It will be several months before 2005 statistics will be compiled and released.

In the five-year period 2000-2004, DeSoto had 9,200 births and 4,120 deaths, which produced a natural population increase of 5,080. The increase is in addition to and being fueled by the major growth from people moving to DeSoto from other locations.

Births to teenage mothers in 2004 totaled 212, an increase from 189 in 2003 but still below the record of 223 set in 1999. Most teenage mothers, 78.3 percent, were not married.

Overall, 582, or 29.4 percent, of the county's 1,978 births were to single women.

Statewide, 20,684, or 48.3 percent, of the 42,809 births in 2004 were to single women.

Reflecting national and state numbers, heart disease and cancer continue to rank first and second among the causes of death in the county. Twelve people died from suicide and four from homicide.
