Hospital Gets Extra Pounds 150,000 for Staff

By DAVID POWELL

AN EXTRA pounds 150,000 is being invested in a North Wales hospital to hire more doctors and healthcare assistants.

It is hoped the cash will help reduce waiting times and doctors' working hours at Llandudno Hospital.

The Conwy Local Health Board and North West Wales NHS Trust funding should safeguard the hospital's casualty unit until February 2007 with doctors on hand 24-hours-a-day.

The plans will also see the A&E department re-named the minor injuries unit.

That move was last night criticised by Lord Roger Roberts of Llandudno who claimed the February 2006 change may confuse patients.

He said people may not realise doctors will continue to treat ailments such as chest pains and other serious conditions.

But trust spokesman Alan Parry insisted services would not be reduced after the name-change.

He said renaming the department made it clear Llandudno Hospital did not handle major trauma cases.

But Lord Roberts said: "The whole re-naming can lead to confusion and possibly endanger life."

He added: "This could be continuing the slide in facilities in Llandudno. Llandudno must be protected, especially as it has such an elderly population."

Lord Roberts added: "We accept that we can pass things on to a larger hospital than Llandudno with more facilities.

"But if we have a major accident we need a bigger back-up than Llandudno can provide."
