FDA Recalls Poison Dog Food

Posted on: Saturday, 31 December 2005, 18:00 CST

The Food and Drug Administration has recalled toxic pet food that killed at least 23 dogs in the United States and was exported to 29 other countries.

The FDA issued a consumer alert about pet food produced at Diamond Pet Food's Gaston, S.C., plant that contained the toxic fungus aflatoxin.

The FDA urges dog owners to check their pet's food and call a veterinarian if needed.

Symptoms include sluggishness, loss of appetite, jaundice, vomiting, bloody diarrhea and fever.

All remaining pet food from that plant should be returned to the point of purchase.

The FDA has contacted the 29 countries the food has been exported to and is working with state regulators to address the situation.
