Area's First Babies Arrive Newborns Make Debut for Geneva, Aurora Couples As New Year's Day Dawns

For Jason and Nicole Blazier, New Year's Eve 2005 started like any other.

The Geneva couple enjoyed an evening out with friends and were anxiously counting the days until Jan. 10, when Nicole was scheduled to have a C-section to bring their second child into the world.

But their baby girl had other ideas.

Early New Year's Day, Nicole began feeling pain. The couple decided to hop in the car and make the 45-minute drive to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Lake Barrington to check on the status of the baby. Nicole was admitted shortly after 6 a.m.

After being evaluated, doctors decided to prep Nicole for an emergency C-section. At 7:41 a.m., the Blaziers' second child, Morgan Virginia Blazier, was born - becoming the first baby of the year born to Tri-Cities parents.

Morgan weighed in at 7 lbs., 9 oz. and measured 21 inches long.

"It was quite a surprise," Nicole said, as she lay in her hospital bed holding her newborn daughter. "She was ready."

Morgan will join 2-year-old brother Sam. When Sam came to visit his new baby sister, he was more interested in the gadgets around the hospital room than his new sister, his dad said with a laugh.

The hospital gave the family a gift basket including a picture frame, stuffed animal, blanket and baby clothes as a congratulatory gift.

"The first baby of the year is always an exciting event for the parents and all the staff here," said hospital spokeswoman Ro Ostergaard.

Morgan was the first of what is expected to be about 2,000 births the Lake County hospital will handle this year, she said.

"We're glad the baby is healthy and mom is doing fine," Ostergaard said. "That's the most important part."

Minutes after Morgan made her way into the world, Maria Campos gave birth to son Edgar at 7:50 a.m. Sunday at Provena Mercy Hospital in Aurora. Edgar was the first baby born in the Tri-Cities area. Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva had no New Year's Day births as of late Sunday.

Campos suspects that her husband, Jose, used one of the traditional holiday wishes made for the coming months to ask to see his healthy baby boy a little bit early. Edgar wasn't due for another two weeks, and the couple's first child, 22-month-old Mitzy, was delivered a day after her due date in a less-than- pleasant delivery.

But Edgar came smoothly into the world in just under four hours in what Maria dubbed a "nice calm labor."

"I just can't believe it," said a bubbly Maria, holding the 19 inch, 7-pound, 12-ounce boy.

The hospital staff welcomed their first new addition of the year with sparkling grape juice and a gift basket of baby supplies topped with a light blue baseball-toting Beanie Baby.

Jose, a construction worker, was busy preparing his own gift for the boy, fixing up the couple's first home just recently purchased on Aurora's near-east side.
