"Because patients place a high value on the service aspects of their hospital stay, providing patients with a consistent, positive experience year after year is as important to hospitals as it is to any other service industry," said Steven D. Wood, senior vice president and general manager of the healthcare division of J.D. Power and Associates. "To be recognized three times shows a sustained commitment to service excellence and demonstrates the hard work of Sioux Valley's nurses, physicians and administrative staff."
The service excellence distinction was determined by surveying a random sample of recently discharged Sioux Valley patients on their perceptions of their hospital stay and comparing the results to the national benchmark established by the annual J.D. Power and Associates National Hospital Service Performance Study(SM).
The telephone-based research conducted among Sioux Valley patients focuses on the five key drivers of patient satisfaction with their overall hospital experience that were established in the national study. These drivers include: dignity and respect; speed and efficiency; comfort; information and communication; and emotional support.
Sioux Valley Hospital notably exceeded the national benchmark study score for overall inpatient satisfaction. The hospital performed particularly well compared to the national study in providing care to patients with speed and efficiency. The hospital received notably high ratings in this area relative to the national study on the speed and efficiency of the tests and treatments personnel and the nurses' performance of their regular duties.
Sioux Valley also performed well relative to the national study in providing patients with a comfortable experience, especially on providing a comfortable room and the food, overall.
Sioux Valley Hospital's overall patient satisfaction has held constant since the hospital's 2004 study findings. However, among the five key drivers of patient satisfaction, the hospital demonstrated the greatest improvement on speed and efficiency and comfort. When looking at the most important individual attributes, Sioux Valley shows the greatest improvement from 2004 to 2005 on the courtesy of nurses and the nurses providing a clear explanation of treatments.
Additionally, a majority of Sioux Valley patients indicate they have more or much more trust and confidence in the hospital after their most recent stay. Overall trust and confidence in the hospital after their most recent stay is higher among Sioux Valley Hospital patients compared to the national average.
"This award is especially meaningful for Sioux Valley because it comes from the opinion of our patients, and is a true reflection of the care they received," said Becky Nelson, president of Sioux Valley Hospital USD Medical Center. "I want to thank the patients of Sioux Valley Hospital USD Medical Center for recognizing the great care of our staff and physicians, and I want to commend the staff and physicians for their dedication to service excellence and to making a difference in the lives of our patients and families. It is once again an honor and a privilege to be recognized for outstanding service excellence."
Non-government, acute-care hospitals throughout the nation are eligible for the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital recognition for inpatient services, emergency department services, as well as outpatient services. Distinction is valid for one year, after which the hospital may reapply for this recognition.
