Society of Hospital Medicine to Launch Journal of Hospital Medicine in February 2006

Posted on: Friday, 6 January 2006, 09:00 CST

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), the premier medical society representing hospitalists, is launching a new peer-reviewed medical journal, the Journal of Hospital Medicine, in February 2006 to promote the science and practice of hospital medicine and the enhancement of hospital care. The Journal of Hospital Medicine will be the nation's first and only peer-reviewed journal devoted exclusively to the publication of research and evidence-based reviews in the area of hospital medicine. Included with the inaugural issue will be a special supplement, "The Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine: A Framework for Curriculum Development by the Society of Hospital Medicine."

According to Journal Editor-in-Chief Mark V. Williams, M.D., FACP, the Journal of Hospital Medicine was developed to fill the current void in "original research and review articles covering clinical hospital medicine topics that are critical to the enhancement of inpatient care decision making."

"Our goal is to provide physicians and other healthcare professionals with findings from both basic and clinical science to support informed clinical decision-making," said Dr. Williams. "In addition, the Journal will foster balanced debates on medical issues and healthcare trends that impact inpatient care."

According to Williams, the first issue will feature never-before-published research analyzing the treatment of patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia as well as original research on hospital-acquired gastrointestinal bleeding. Non-clinical aspects of hospital medicine will also be featured, including public health and the political, philosophical, ethical and legal issues surrounding hospital care. The special "Core Competencies" supplement will outline a vision for the education and training of hospitalists.

Dr. Williams was appointed editor-in-chief of the Journal of Hospital Medicine in March 2005 and is a former president and board member of SHM. A professor of medicine and director of the Hospital Medicine Unit at Emory University School of Medicine, Dr. Williams established the first hospitalist program at a public hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, in 1998. He is also executive medical director of EHCA, a collaboration between Emory Healthcare and HCA Healthcare, the largest hospital companies in the U.S. Dr. Williams currently supervises a growing program of more than 50 hospitalists at two Emory Healthcare hospitals and four HCA medical centers.

In addition to the Journal of Hospital Medicine, the Society of Hospital Medicine also produces a member news magazine, The Hospitalist, which contains the latest in hospital medicine news and industry issues along with updates on society-sponsored programs, activities and educational opportunities. Both publications are published by global publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Subscriptions to the Journal of Hospital Medicine are offered free to SHM members. Non-members may subscribe by calling 1-800-825-7550 or emailing cs-journals@wiley.co.uk. Individual rates for non-SHM members are $110 in the U.S., Canada and Mexico and $146 in all other countries. Institutions can register to receive complimentary online access in 2006 by contacting optinaccess@wiley.co.uk.

Hospital medicine is the nation's fastest-growing medical specialty, with care provided by hospitalists -- physicians whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Currently, there are approximately 12,000 hospitalists in the U.S., and that number is projected to grow to 30,000 by 2010.
