NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL: Pills Do Not Trigger Suicide

Posted on: Tuesday, 10 January 2006, 06:00 CST

The risk of suicide does not increase when patients start taking antidepressants, according to a new study.

The research found that in contrast to a 2004 advisory from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the number of suicide attempts in adults fell by 60 per cent during the month after they started treatment, and declined further in the following five months.

The FDA warned that suicidal behaviour may emerge after people begin taking ten newer types of the antidepressants - bupropion, citalopram, fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine, mirtazapine, nefazodone, paroxetine, sertraline, escitalopram and venlafaxine.

Scientists at Seattle's Group Health Cooperative analysed computerised medical and pharmacy records for 65,103 patients between 1992 and 2003.
