A campaign to crack down on the evil of drugs trafficking throughout Cardiff was being launched today.
South Wales Police were launching their 'Rat on a Rat' campaign to crackdown on drug dealers in communities across the capital.
The two-month scheme, which has been successful in Swansea and the Rhondda but is a first for Cardiff, will target Class A drug dealers after an increase in heroin, crack cocaine and ecstasy on city streets, according to police.
The campaign asks members of the public to pass on information relating to drug dealers by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously.
Detective Chief Inspector Alun Thomas, from the intelligence unit of South Wales Police in Cardiff, said: 'It's due to an increased seizure of Class A drugs recently in Cardiff that we realised that drug dealers are targeting our local communities in an attempt to improve their unscrupulous finances.
'What the drug dealers are doing by selling heroin and crack cocaine in our communities is breaking down the fabric of the community and changing lives.
'What's important for us is that we have the support and help of the public to feed us the information from their communities and tell us who they think is targeting the young people with this trade so that we can deal with these people harshly and eradicate them from our city.'
DCI Thomas said the scheme had been successful in other South Wales towns and cities over the past three or four years, and added that drug seizures over the next few months would be a measure of its success.
'Everyone else has done this campaign with varying levels of success, but no doubt as a capital city this will be exceptionally successful.'
Anyone with information about people selling drugs in Cardiff can contact Crimestoppers in complete confidence on 0800 555111.
