Located on the Palmetto Health Richland campus, the Heart Hospital is the state's first free-standing hospital dedicated solely to heart care and includes:
- 124 private patient rooms with outdoor views - decentralized nurses' stations placing the nurse virtually at the patient's bedside - critical care units - telemetry and progressive care units - labs and diagnostic test areas - cardiac rehabilitation program - pulmonary rehabilitation program - landscaped atriums for the comfort of patients and visitors - 700-car parking garage - gift shop - restaurant and coffee bar
The medical office building, owned by Columbia Heart and Carolina Cardiac Surgery Associates, is attached to the hospital with the buildings sharing a common atrium. This design enables physicians and clinical staff to spend more time caring for patients. 10,000 square feet of the medical office building is devoted to state-of-the-art cardiac rehabilitation and community meeting rooms.
"For 40 years, Palmetto Health Richland has been caring for the hearts of our community," says Kester S. Freeman Jr., Palmetto Health CEO. "Opening this Heart Hospital continues our legacy of providing extraordinary care but takes it to a new level. By bringing together the most complete cardiac care featuring the latest technology and pairing it with the expertise and experience of the physicians and clinical staff into a single location, we create a level of quality care for this community that is second to none."
Dr. Donald Alexander, Columbia Heart cardiologist, added, "Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in South Carolina and the country at large. Our mission as physicians is to change that reality. Our involvement from the beginning in planning and managing this Heart Hospital, is key. We believe this is the best possible option for our patients."
Palmetto Health, the state's largest integrated health system which serves more than 600,000 patients each year, is comprised of three outstanding hospitals -- Palmetto Health Richland, and Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia and Easley.
