Guilford to Buy Old Hotel Plot

Jan. 11--GUILFORD -- Town officials are moving forward on the purchase of a parcel known locally as the Braeburn lot on North Main Street.

James Chastenay, owner of the lot that formerly housed the Braeburn Hotel, recently agreed to sell the property to the town for $25,000. That is the same amount residents approved for the purchase of the land in 2004 after a fire destroyed the historic hotel in March 2003.

Residents who wanted some control over the use of the property approved the funds in anticipation of the purchase, but up until now, the owner has been reluctant to sell it.

Town Manager Tom Goulette, who advised selectmen about the move last week, said the transaction will be completed soon.

The Braeburn lot borders land and a building that KeyBank of Guilford recently gave to the town. Town officials have no plans for the two properties, but do expect to raze the building, Goulette said Tuesday.

In another development that will benefit the town, Goulette told selectmen that Temp-Cart Real Estate Partnership, formed by local people, has proposed to give the town land on Water Street that includes the basketball court and the open space between the sanitary district's land and the intersection of Water and River streets. The land the basketball court is on has been leased from the partnership.

Selectmen also awarded a tax-acquired property to Shirley Johnson. Johnson submitted the highest of six bids that ranged from $2,500 to $15,500.

The annual budget committee meeting was scheduled for Monday, Feb. 13, at Piscataquis Community High School.
