Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia Celebrates Three-Year Partnership With Nationally Recognized SilverSneakers(R) Fitness Program

Posted on: Tuesday, 17 January 2006, 09:01 CST

The SilverSneakers(R) Fitness Program marked its three-year anniversary with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia (BCBSGa) in the greater Atlanta area. Since Jan. 1, 2003, the nation's leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults has been available to BCBSGA's 65-plus members at fitness centers and class sites throughout Atlanta and the surrounding area. Through the unique program, BCBSGa members receive a basic fitness center membership at participating fitness centers (visit www.silversneakers.com for complete list) where they can enjoy specialized SilverSneakers(R) classes taught by certified instructors that focus on improving strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.

"We are extremely pleased to celebrate our three-year partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia as they improve the health and well-being of their older adult members. We look forward to a continued strong partnership for years to come," stated Mary Swanson, president and CEO of HealthCare Dimensions, the Arizona-based company that designed and manages the SilverSneakers program.

In addition to classes, SilverSneakers participants can also enjoy other fitness center membership benefits, including use of each location's exercise equipment (e.g., treadmills, exercise bikes, pool, etc.), weight training, circuit training, and other fitness offerings (e.g., aerobics, sauna, hot tub, social events).

"The SilverSneakers Fitness Program is a much-needed, and much- appreciated, benefit to our 65-plus members. We have enjoyed our relationship with HealthCare Dimensions since 2003. SilverSneakers became a benefit in our 65-plus plans in January 2004, and we also currently offer it as a benefit to our Medicare Advantage HMO members in the Atlanta and Columbus markets," said Carolyn Haynes, regional vice president, senior services and compliance, BCBSGa. "We encourage our members to think about their health and wellness, and being affiliated with a program such as SilverSneakers gives our members opportunities to make a difference in their health care."
