Another institution the American First Lady visited is the Fevers Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital [Ghana]. It was set up in 1962 but was dedicated to infectious diseases in 1967. Since 1986 when the first HIV/AIDS case was diagnosed in the country, the unit has also treated AIDS cases.
According to statistics, the ratio of female to male patients treated at the unit has reduced from 6:1 in the late 1980s to about 2: 1 last year.
The plight of women and children living with AIDS has been a key concern of the US First Lady Laura Bush and as part of her visit to Ghana she met a group of women care givers of AIDS orphans as well as single parents of HIV infected children. [Passage omitted]
The head of the Fevers Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the Chief Executive of the hospital Prof Frimpong Boateng in the company of other officials and the Minister of Health Courage Quashigah conducted Mrs Bush round the Fevers Unit.
