Clarient Diagnostics Services Receives Accreditation From College of American Pathologists and Moves Into New Laboratory Facility

Posted on: Wednesday, 18 January 2006, 09:01 CST

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Clarient, Inc. , a premier technology and services resource for pathologists, oncologists and the pharmaceutical industry, announced that they have moved their Diagnostics Services laboratory to a new expanded facility in Aliso Viejo, California. In addition, the lab has been awarded accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent on-site inspection.

Clarient's move was motivated in part by capacity constraints at Clarient's former facility, and Clarient expects that the new laboratory facility will enable it to efficiently scale its laboratory operations to meet the growing demand for its services.

Clarient President and CEO, Ronald A. Andrews, Jr. said, "This move represents the achievement of a key milestone in our growth strategy. This state-of-the-art facility will allow us to use our current resources more efficiently, provide increased capacity to achieve the growth expected over the coming years, and add new technologies for advanced cancer assessment as they become available. In addition, we will be able to accommodate our expanding work with biopharmaceutical companies as we develop emerging applications utilizing our ACIS technology, where we continue to be a leader in rare event detection. Finally, in the near future we also plan to move the remainder of our operations, which includes administration and our Instrument Systems division, to this one consolidated corporate site."

After receiving the CAP accreditation, Clarient's Medical Director, Kenneth J. Bloom, M.D. said, "Our team is very proud to have received national recognition by this esteemed organization. It acknowledges the importance that we place on exceeding the highest quality standards by providing our pathology customers -- and their physician clients -- with the best possible test results." The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government's own inspection program.

About Clarient Inc.

Clarient provides market leading technologies, services and expert support for the characterization, assessment and treatment of cancer, leading to more accurate diagnoses by pathologists, more confident treatment decisions by oncologists, a more efficient way to identify and develop pharmaceuticals and, ultimately, better outcomes for patients. A majority-owned subsidiary of Safeguard Scientifics, Inc., Clarient was formed in 1996 to develop and market the Automated Cellular Imaging System (ACIS). This digital imaging and assessment system allowed pathologists, for the first time, to obtain potentially more reliable, reproducible quantitative results for a broad range of slide-based diagnostic tests. In 2005, the ACIS and other leading diagnostic technologies such as flow cytometry and genetic testing were brought in-house to a state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory and surrounded by a team of premiere cancer specialists, forming the Clarient Diagnostic Services business. This facility and the Clarient team support the efforts of pathologists and the biopharmaceutical industry as a central resource for cancer diagnostics, disease interpretation, remote pathology, and contract research operations.

Clarient's mission is to provide critical information to clinicians that will improve the quality and reduce the cost of patient care, and speed drug discovery. Many of the top clinical laboratories, hospitals, university medical centers and biopharmaceutical companies in the United States and Europe are currently using Clarient technology and services. Clarient and ACIS are registered trademarks of Clarient. For more information, visit http://www.clarientinc.com/.
