Nationally Recognized SilverSneakers Fitness Program Featured on 'NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams'

Posted on: Wednesday, 18 January 2006, 12:00 CST

The SilverSneakers(R) Fitness Program, the nation's leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults, was featured on the Jan. 16, 2006, broadcast of "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" in a segment focusing on exercise and its impact on dementia. The piece was based on a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on Jan. 17, 2006, in which researchers found that healthy people who reported exercising regularly had a 30 to 40 percent lower risk of dementia.

The award-winning SilverSneakers program appeals to participants at all fitness levels because of its high-touch, customized approach to increasing physical activity. With the average life expectancy in the United States now at 77 years, quality of life in one's later years is increasingly important. Adults over age 65 who adopt a physically active lifestyle can improve their health -- and their quality of life -- substantially. Yet the majority of adults in this age group engage in no physical activity.

"As this recent report on exercise and dementia indicates, the long-term health benefits of regular physical activity for older adults are compelling," stated Mary Swanson, vice chairman of Axia Health Management and founder of the SilverSneakers program. "Moreover, physical activity interventions like SilverSneakers can empower sedentary individuals to make and sustain physical activity behavior changes that play a vital role in preventing, delaying the onset of, and reducing disability from many chronic conditions commonly associated with aging."
