St Petersburg, 19 January: Every year the number of deaths in Russia from overdoses of illegal drugs rises, drugs specialist and member of the council of experts under the St Petersburg government's interdepartmental commission to prevent drug abuse and smuggling Dr Sergey Belogurov told journalists today.
According to him, in the last year the number of deaths caused by drugs in Russia has risen by 30 per cent. In 2005 one hundred thousand Russians died from drug overdoses, while the figure for 2004 was 70,000 deaths. "The official statistics do not reflect the real figures as they do not include suicides by drug addicts and also deaths from illnesses that accompany drug use. The real figures are much higher, the specialist said.
Belogurov also noted that the age of drug users is falling. According to the statistics, now some adolescents start using drugs at the age of 11.
