Jan. 21--BANGOR -- A Waterville man arrested with a loaded assault rifle, the makings of a pipe bomb and a pound of cocaine is being held in the Piscataquis County Jail on federal charges.
Roy Garland, 20, is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of firearms in connection with a drug trafficking offense.
If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million on the drug charges and up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on the weapons charge.
A detention hearing before U.S. Magistrate Margaret Kravchuk is scheduled for Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Bangor. Garland appeared before her on Thursday.
Originally charged in Kennebec County, state charges against Garland have been dismissed, according to his attorney, Don Brown of Brewer.
Garland was arrested on Jan. 3 after Maine State Trooper David Pelletier found weapons and drugs in his sport utility vehicle. The trooper stopped to investigate the SUV because it had remained for an extended period in a park-and-ride lot in Sidney, state police said earlier this month.
The trooper found two loaded handguns, a loaded shotgun, a loaded assault rifle, numerous rounds of ammunition, bomb components, a bulletproof vest and stun guns and mace. In addition to the cocaine, police also found 50 Ecstasy tablets and 18 or 19 tablets of Methadone.
When troopers told Garland that he was going to be arrested on cocaine charges, the man attempted to flee, according to court documents.
