Health Officials Warn Patrons of Vancouver Restaurant to Get Hepatitis Shot

Posted on: Saturday, 21 January 2006, 15:00 CST

VANCOUVER (CP) - There has been another hepatitis scare in Vancouver, this time at a restaurant after a food handler was found to be infected.

Health officials are warning that some patrons may have been exposed to the hepatitis A virus at the Foundation Eatery Lounge.

The alert affects people who ate humus, sandwiches or raw vegetables at the restaurant on Jan. 7 through Jan. 9 and on the 14th.

They are being told to get a vaccination shot.

The infected employee has since taken sick leave and there is no current risk to the public, said Dr. Patricia Daly with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.

In 2002, a Capers grocery store employee was discovered to have hepatitis A, affecting thousands of customers who purchased deli food items.

Eight people contracted the virus and 6,500 others were given immune injections to lower their risk of getting sick.
