Glaxo OTC weight drug is effective -FDA panel

BETHESDA, Maryland (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline's low-dose
version of Xenical is effective in helping people lose weight
when used without a prescription for six months, a U.S.
advisory panel said unanimously on Monday.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel of outside
advisers is weighing whether the drug should be approved for
over-the-counter sales.

Some members of the panel, which must still consider
whether the drug is safe, expressed concern about whether the
nonprescription version would be effective long-term.
