News Advisory:

UPDATE: EDITORS PLEASE NOTE ROOM CHANGE.

WHAT: National Press Club "MORNING NEWSMAKER" Media Briefing

WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m.

WHERE: National Press Club (Murrow Room), 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, D.C.

The CEO of the Memorial Hermann Hospital System, Dan Wolterman, will discuss rising health care costs in America, impacts on America's hospital systems, and innovative new approaches to providing better care to those in need.

The President's State of the Union address is expected to discuss rising health care costs. Running the largest hospital system in Houston -- America's fourth largest city -- Dan Wolterman is in a unique position to address the challenges of uninsured.

Lack of access to affordable health insurance keeps a growing number of Americans from seeking the healthcare they need. This problem is particularly acute in Texas. Before this year's Gulf Coast hurricanes, about 31 percent of Houstonians didn't have health insurance. That's the highest rate of any major city in the country. Now, thousands more uninsured hurricane evacuees are living in Houston.

Wolterman advocates better coordination of public health resources, but he also believes business must be part of the solution. For example, he is working with local leaders to develop insurance plans for the working poor to be funded by employers, employees and government grants. He also supports creation of insurance co-ops for small businesses.
