January 25, 2006
China reported Wednesday it had 70,000 people newly infected with HIV/AIDS last year, while about 25,000 people died of the disease across the country.
A joint assessment report released by the Chinese Health Ministry, the World Health Organization and the U.N. AIDS agency said there were 650,000 people living with the virus in China, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Most were infected through drug injection and unprotected sexual contacts, reported China Daily.
The statement also said that the disease has been spreading to average people from the high-risk groups and the HIV/AIDS epidemic shows no signs of abating.
