NYC's Animal Medical Center Receives $10 Million From Geoffrey Beene's Estate

NEW YORK, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The late fashion designer Geoffrey Beene bequeathed $10 million of his estate to New York City's The Animal Medical Center, it was announced by Dr. Guy Pidgeon, CEO of the renowned animal hospital, research center, and teaching institution.
Dr. Pidgeon said Mr. Beene, a nature and animal lover, was particularly fond of The AMC because of his pet dogs, and he supported the city's leading animal care institution during his life. A Louisiana native, Mr. Beene was one of New York's most famous fashion designers. He died in 2004 from complications after pneumonia, at the age of 77.
The Beene bequest raises the endowment of The AMC to $50 million from $40 million, said Cynthia Phipps, Board Chair, and will allow the Center to maintain and expand its role as a premiere post-graduate education facility. A portion of the gift will be designated for the acquisition of the latest diagnostic technology for animals -- including a linear accelerator for precision radiation treatments -- plus physical improvements to the client waiting area.
The enhanced endowment also will allow the continuation of programs that underwrite the routine care of companion animals for the indigent elderly and the visually-impaired; counseling for owners of ill or deceased pets; and pet outreach visits to nursing homes, senior centers, and schools for blind or autistic children.
The not-for-profit AMC is the city's largest facility for animal care, research, and education. The AMC's 90 veterinarians (30 of them board- certified) work with referring veterinarians to assist with specialty or critical care for companion animals and exotics. With over 50,000 patient visits annually, The AMC is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In anticipation of its 100th anniversary in 2010, The AMC is completing a comprehensive long-range plan to continue to lead and innovate in the 21st century.
