The Welsh Assembly Government has been accused of failing patients as it emerged more than 600 hospital beds are unavailable on any given day. New delayed transfers of care figures reveal that 621 people were stuck in hospital when they should have been transferred to another care setting or home.
And almost a third of the blocked beds - 192 - were in hospitals run by Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust, including the University Hospital of Wales.
Welsh Conservatives' health spokesman Jonathan Morgan said, 'Bed blocking is at the root of many of the problems faced by the NHS in Wales today.
'Until the Assembly Government gets to grips with this fundamental issue we will continue to see long waiting lists and falling hospital productivity.
An Assembly Government spokeswoman said,
'Across Wales, 98.5% of discharges from hospital are on time.
'The number of delays in December 2005 was at its lowest since September 2003 (1,116), a reduction of 44%.
'The number of bed days involved in delays fell by 50%.
