Minnesota Coaches Should Be Coached on Asthma, Says American Lung Association of Minnesota

Posted on: Friday, 27 January 2006, 15:01 CST

ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Coaches in Minnesota should add one more item to their clipboards -- a plan on how to work with athletes with asthma -- according to the American Lung Association of Minnesota (ALAMN). Asthma is so common -- more than a quarter million Minnesotans have this chronic lung disease -- every coach, referee or physical education teacher in the state is likely working with at least one athlete with asthma.

To help coaches understand asthma, so they can help their players with asthma properly manage their condition while succeeding in sports, the Minnesota Department of Health is offering an new online program called "Winning With Asthma."

The program, which can be found at http://www.winningwithasthma.org/ , is a free 30-minute interactive educational tool designed primarily for coaches working with young athletes, but it is appropriate for all age groups. Upon completing the program, the coach will receive a special clipboard detailing steps to take during an asthma attack, a certificate of completion, and a booklet that expands on asthma information written with coaches in mind.

"This is an important program that teaches coaches about steps they can take before a sporting event to reduce the likelihood that an athlete will have an asthma episode," said Penny Fena, director of respiratory health programs for the American Lung Association of Minnesota. "If an attack does occur, coaches who have completed this program will know what urgent steps they should take."

The Coach's Asthma Clipboard program was developed through a collaboration involving the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) Asthma Program, the Utah Department of Health Asthma Program, and the Minnesota Steps to a Healthier US Initiative.
