National Coalition on Health Care: President's Proposals Fall Far Short of Solving Nation's Health Care Problems

Posted on: Monday, 30 January 2006, 15:00 CST

News Advisory:

WHAT: Comment on President Bush's Health Care Proposals

In his State of the Union address this week, President Bush is expected to announce a series of proposals to deal with health insurance and health care costs. If the proposals are basically those being reported in the media, the National Coalition on Health Care says it believes that those strategies will fall far short of addressing the critical problems in our health care system, which are a growing number of uninsured, rapidly escalating costs, and an epidemic of wasteful, poor quality care. According to the organization, our nation needs much broader and more effective solutions.

WHO: Henry E. Simmons, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., president of the National Coalition on Health Care will be available to comment on the President's proposals on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 -- by telephone or in person in New York City.

------

Following is a statement by Henry E. Simmons, M.D., president, National Coalition on Health Care on the President's State of the Union health care proposals:

Our Coalition is pleased that President Bush has made health care one of his top priorities, because we believe that the crisis in health care is the nation's number one domestic problem.

We strongly support the President's proposals for health information technology and system transparency. But these and other of his proposals are only a beginning and alone will fall far short of what is necessary. They are neither strong enough nor comprehensive enough to deal with the magnitude and urgency of the health care problems we face. In addition, several of these proposals could end up hurting those who most need health care protection.

Our health care system is in crisis with very severe and growing cost, access, and quality problems. Those problems are so major that they now have become a national economic issue, affecting job creation, living standards for workers and retirees, pension adequacy, and the competitiveness of American firms in world markets.

We will need a much broader, bolder, and more effective approach than has been proposed to date. The National Coalition on Health Care has developed such an approach and stands ready to work with the President and Congress to deal with the problems in our health care system. Comprehensive health care system reform makes economic, moral, and practical sense.
