Association Publication Helps Women Take Action Against Heart Disease

Posted on: Thursday, 2 February 2006, 00:00 CST

Help yourself or someone you love live healthy by using the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women magazine cookbook, Love Your Heart.

The special limited-edition cookbook, priced at just $3.99, will be available in major grocery stores' checkout stands nationwide beginning Feb. 7.

Created to help women reduce their risk for heart disease, the 100-page cookbook contains 41 savory recipes, information on heart disease risk factors and prevention, and tips on how to live a long and healthy life. The delectable and easy-to-follow recipes are based on the American Heart Association's dietary guidelines, which help readers achieve a balanced, nutritious diet. Appetizing full- course menus are also provided.

Other exciting features include "Get Involved," which provides information on American Heart Association programs and resources to help women stay heart healthy. "Tales From the Heart" are real-life stories of women whose experiences have given them insight on how to take control of their heart health.

Cardiovascular disease kills over 480,000 women a year, roughly one woman per minute. Moreover, cardiovascular disease claims more lives than the next six leading causes of death combined, including cancer.

Yet, only 13 percent of women are aware that heart disease is their No. 1 health threat.

"This year, Go Red For Women is calling women to action with its new tagline 'Love Your Heart,'" said Judi Nuckolls, Regional Director for the AHA. "This publication provides women with the necessary tools to take action against heart disease through its great recipes, compelling stories and valuable American Heart Association program information."

The digest-size publication, produced by Publications International, Ltd. (PIL), complements the association's Go Red For Women movement, which raises awareness of cardiovascular diseases' threat to women in the United States.
