THIEVES preyed on 64 year-old Monica McCartney while she slept in her hospital bed.
Monica had pounds 50 and a bank card stolen from her handbag this week.
Monica, from Whiston, who has multiple sclerosis, was being treated for a lung infection on ward C3 at Whiston hospital.
The theft was discovered by her daughter Cindy Rogers, who had removed the money for her mother from the hospital cashpoint and put it in her purse inside a pocket in her handbag, securing it with a pin.
She said: "I can't believe anybody would do that to someone so ill - they are the lowest of the low."
A spokesperson for St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals NHS Trust said: "The trust always takes complaints and reports of theft seriously and investigates them rigorously.
Police said they are investigating the alleged theft.
