National Study Recognizes Crittenton Hospital Medical Center for Second Consecutive Year for Clinical Excellence

Posted on: Monday, 6 February 2006, 15:00 CST

ROCHESTER, Mich., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- A study released today analyzing clinical quality at the nation's 5,000 hospitals places Crittenton Hospital Medical Center among the top 5% of hospitals in the nation and a recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence(TM). The hospital achieved the same distinction in 2005. The study conducted by HealthGrades, the leading healthcare ratings company, found that hospitals in the top 5% in the nation had mortality rates that were, on average, 22.02% lower than other hospitals, and major complication rates that were 10.8% lower.

Each year, HealthGrades conducts the most comprehensive studies of hospital quality in America, producing a rating for every nonfederal hospital in as many as 26 diagnoses and procedures. Hospitals that receive the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence are those hospitals that place among the top 5% nationally when all these ratings are aggregated into a comprehensive score. Only 277 hospitals nationwide are recognized.

"Receiving this award two years in a row speaks volumes about the culture of quality at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center," said Lynn Orfgen, president and CEO of the Crittenton Hospital Medical Center. "It is one thing to be recognized for excellence in a single service area, but something all together different to achieve this level of recognition across all our service areas. A distinction like this is a great testament to the tremendous work and dedication of everyone at Crittenton."

In addition to this overall, hospital-wide clinical quality distinction, HealthGrades has ranked Crittenton Hospital Medical Center among the best in the nation for 2006 in a variety of specific service areas. These include ranking among the top 10% nationally for joint replacement surgery and for overall pulmonary care.

In its study, HealthGrades performed an analysis of more than 37 million Medicare hospital discharges using patient records that cover the latest three-year period, from 2002 to 2004. The analysis is risk-adjusted to account for differences in patient populations between hospitals. In the study, HealthGrades found that Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence outperformed all other hospitals across the procedures and diagnoses studied. HealthGrades estimates that if during the time period studied all patients had gone to a Distinguished Hospital, 152,966 lives could have been saved and 21,896 post-operative complications could have been avoided.

"Every day at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center we envision delivering care that is on the cutting edge," said Orfgen. "It is only through teamwork and the dedication of our staff that this vision becomes a reality. It is because of these individuals that we are among the best in the nation."

Crittenton Hospital Medical Center has been serving Oakland County since 1967 and has 290 beds. With a medical staff of more than 1,600 and more than 500 physicians in 54 specialties, Crittenton is located in Rochester/Rochester Hills. In 2002, Crittenton began an ambitious $86 million Reinvestment project. Scheduled for completion in 2006, the new facility will offer expanded services, advanced medical technology and greater conveniences for our patients and health care professionals.
