New Thinking on P4P and CDHC Success for Hospitals; Healthwise(R) Paper Links Success to 12 Information Therapy Applications

Information therapy can help patients and hospitals succeed in the new pay-for-performance and consumer-directed health care environment, according to a new Healthwise(R) white paper. "It's a Jungle Out There: How Information Therapy Can Tame the Forces of Pay for Performance and Consumer-Directed Care," by Donald W. Kemper, MPH, can be downloaded at www.healthwise.org.
Kemper contends that informed patients can get the best value for their health care dollar and receive better quality care. Information therapy is a breakthrough health care service that provides consumers with the information and the support they need to make better health decisions at virtually every moment in their health care.
Hospitals are faced with two separate and seemingly conflicting trends in the health care economy: pay for performance (P4P) and consumer-directed health care (CDHC). P4P provides incentives to hospitals for proof of quality care. CDHC plans are creating new consumers who are demanding more from their hospitals. The author details 12 information therapy applications that can improve a hospital's quality and satisfaction ratings.
"The success of a hospital in the future will require increasingly competitive attention to cost management, quality improvement, and consumer loyalty," said Kemper, CEO of Healthwise. "Using information therapy provides powerful new tools that integrate all three areas by tapping into an unexpected resource: the consumer."
Currently, hospitals are beginning to respond to both P4P and CDHC in a variety of ways, including voluntary quality reporting and rethinking strategies for price competitiveness and patient relations. Information Therapy provides a more targeted, interactive, and continuous form of patient support. Information Therapy (Ix(R)) is the prescription of information to help patients manage their health at every moment in care.
