PacifiCare Health Systems, one of the nation’s leading health and consumer service organizations, recently ranked St. Mary’s Medical Center in the top 10 percent of Northern California hospitals, the only San Francisco hospital to make the list.

“It’s an honor to be selected among the elite hospitals,” said Ken Steele, president of St. Mary’s Medical Center. “However, it’s even more rewarding to know our patients benefit from our excellence in areas such as cardiac care, orthopedics and general surgery. Our doctors and staff work hard to deliver compassionate, high-quality, affordable health services and this is proof we are succeeding at our mission.”

St. Mary’s Medical Center received an “A” as an overall quality grade and 14 “Best Practice” stars. This is St. Mary’s Medical Center’s second “A” and top 10 percent designation since PacifiCare started the QUALITY INDEX(R) Profile of Hospitals in 2003.

Grades represent the relative performance of each hospital, based on percentile placements for each of the measures. These grades show how one hospital compares to others, across a variety of measures. Also, if a hospital scores in the 80th percentile or higher in any given category, it receives a “Best Practice” designation, represented by a star.

PacifiCare annually reviews and evaluates the quality of care provided by its contracted medical groups and hospitals and reports the results in its QUALITY INDEX(R) Profile of Hospitals, which measures the clinical and service performance of approximately 200 participating hospitals in California on 56 measures, including specific areas related to cardiac care, orthopedics, general surgery, cancer treatment, medical conditions and pediatric care, as well as utilization.

“We believe the QUALITY INDEX(R) Profile will help improve accountability and competition among hospitals, foster an environment for continuous quality improvement and promote the sharing of best medical and service practices,” states the PacifiCare’s Member Report 2005.
