MEDICAL CARE - No Waiting at Harbor of Health in Harbor Town

Harbor of Health, a patient-focused health care facility, opened last fall in the Harbor Town area.

The facility offers a doctor's office and wellness center with a variety of fitness and health education classes, but it's the innovative approach to health care that sets it apart.

If you've ever waited hours to spend mere minutes with your doctor, you probably agree.

Dr. Richard K. Thomas, a health care consultant affiliated with the Center for Health Services Research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and a published health care author, had this to say:

"Research clearly shows a steady erosion of patient confidence levels in physicians, and this, in turn, is driving an increased willingness of patients to search for alternative sources of care that better meet their needs."

Harbor of Health focuses on preventive care by providing a comprehensive personalized health plan - called a Prescription for Health - for each member of the Harbor Plan program.

The doctor's office is focused on preventing health problems instead of just treating illnesses.

A care manager is assigned to each member and acts as personal coach and motivator.

Dr. Thomas coordinated a 2004 study of Memphians who live or work Downtown. The most significant finding was that of 21 attributes of a health facility, respondents most often selected "no office visit waits" as the most-desired improvement in health care.

Harbor of Health guarantees members same-day appointments and their medical staff sees approximately 70 percent of patients within 5 minutes of scheduled appointment time. Time spent at the doctor's office is quality time talking with your doctor vs. unproductive wait time.

For more information about Harbor of Health, and an offer for a free 30-minute massage available through the end of February, call 522-1555 or visit harborofhealth.com.

Shelley Thomas, a resident of Cooper-Young, is the wellness center manager for Harbor of Health.
