Minister Approves Second Mental Health Trust Plan

By BARRY NELSON Health Editor

PLANS to create a mental health and learning disabilities trust in the north of the region have been given ministerial approval.

It follows a similar announcement last week of the creation of a mental health trust in the south of the region.

Liam Byrne, Care Services Minister, has approved the creation of a single trust that would serve Wearside, Tyneside and Northumberland.

It will be called Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust and will provide all the mental health, learning disability, neuro- rehabilitation and substance misuse services presently provided by the three trusts as well as other specialist services.

It will replace three trusts:Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland Mental Health NHS Trust, Northgate and Prudhoe NHS Trust and South of Tyne and Wearside Mental Health NHS Trust.

The trust will serve a population of 1.4m, employ about 7,500 staff and have an annual income of more than 250m.

Last week, Mr Byrne announced the merger of two other North-East mental health trusts to form the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust. The merger, which will create a trust with 5,000 staff covering a population of 1.4m, will replace the County Durham and Darlington Priority Services NHS Trust and the Tees and North East Yorkshire NHS Trust.

The Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys trust will provide the mental health and learning disability services presently provided by the two existing trusts, as well as addictive behaviour services.

Savings from the mergers are expected to be re-invested in local services provided by the new trusts.

Both new trusts will take over on April 1.
