Hill-Rom's Newest NaviCare Patient Flow System Technology Enables Advanced Decision Management By Monitoring Key Heath Care Business Metrics

Posted on: Monday, 13 February 2006, 12:01 CST

BATESVILLE, Ind., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Hill-Rom, a leading global provider of health care solutions, announces the release of Version 6.1 of its NaviCare(R) Patient Flow System. New Business Area Monitoring (BAM) functionality allows hospital executives and managers to measure key operational metrics and visually manage their status via an executive management dashboard. In addition, the integration of OnSite(TM) technology provides another layer of valuable information from Hill-Rom beds and solutions to NaviCare.

Hill-Rom's NaviCare(R) Patient Flow System -- found in one Cap Gemini Ernst and Young study to have contributed to a hospital realizing $5 million in annual savings -- uses colorful icons on visual displays via networked computers to show staff actionable that can help improve patient flow within the health care facility.

The new Business Area Monitoring (BAM) feature allows hospital leadership to set and monitor key operational metrics to proactively manage patient flow and capacity utilization. This functionality enables hospital leaders to establish thresholds for optimal business processes and receive alerts when those thresholds are being approached or exceeded. Instead of just receiving notification after an important threshold is passed, NaviCare's BAM triggers alerts prior to the situation going 'out-of-bounds,' such as the facility is nearing maximum capacity or caregiver-to-patient ratios are nearing an unacceptable level. Hospitals leaders can visually track these business thresholds and status indicators via an executive management dashboard.

NaviCare 6.1 also features the integration of OnSite technology, linking information from Hill-Rom VersaCare(R) and TotalCare(TM) beds and other Hill- Rom solutions back to NaviCare. The integration of OnSite technology marks a major step in sharing information across Hill-Rom products and other hospital equipment and systems. Making information such as bed type, location, and status available to NaviCare delivers advanced patient placement and equipment management capabilities.

Included in this new version are security enhancements facilitating compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements, bi-directional ADT system interface capabilities, and integration to Active Directory software to simplify IT password management.

Hill-Rom's NaviCare Version 6.1 with OnSite technology will be previewed at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference and Exhibition in San Diego on Feb. 13-16, 2006 and will be available later this year.

The NaviCare Patient Flow System is Hill-Rom's direct response to a healthcare facility's most critical unmet needs. Overcrowding, long thought to be the result of inefficient emergency departments, is now viewed as a systemic hospital-wide patient flow problem. The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) has a standard (LD.3.15) on Managing Patient Flow, and measures leadership progress towards identifying and mitigating impediments to efficient patient flow.
