A BABY who was taken to the doctor's for a routine diphtheria shot was wrongly given the controversial MMR vaccine instead.
It has emerged the seven-week-old boy was mistakenly given the mumps, measles and rubella jab at a surgery in Edinburgh on January 31.
The vaccine is not usually administered to children until they are 12 months old.
The blunder follows reports of the death of a Glasgow woman after nurses gave her drugs meant for another patient.
Barbara Maguire was admitted to Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow suffering from stomach pains.
Doctors told her family she would be fine, but hours later she died after being given drugs meant for the women who previously occupied her hospital bed.
The health board and procurator-fiscal are probing the mix-up that led to the death of the 51-yearold on December 12, 2004.
Her family are also pursuing a claim for damages against the hospital.
