Carolinas Health-Care Provider Delivers Letters of Support in Hospital Bid

Feb. 13--Carolinas HealthCare Systems officials hand-delivered 2,470 letters of support to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control late last week.

The health-care provider, parent of Carolinas Medical Center, is competing with three other companies to build York County's second hospital in the fast-growing Fort Mill area.

"I had five, huge, big black binders," said Dennis Phillips, CHS senior vice president. "They were heavy, and I was hunched over carrying them in."

CHS turned in eight notebooks full of letters of support from York County residents, in alphabetical order with a table of contents in each.

"These people have chosen CHS as their hospital of choice," Phillips said.

"We're very pleased with the show of the support for us."

Four companies -- CHS, Hospital Partners of America, Piedmont Medical Center and Presbyterian Healthcare -- submitted proposals to build a hospital to DHEC, which will make a decision later this year.

DHEC officials say public support is a big factor in the decision-making process.

PMC offers room service From fried chicken to vegetable stir fry, Piedmont Medical Center has fully implemented room service dining for patients and their families.

Patients and guests can order off the menu between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The hospital will cook the food and deliver it within an hour.

"We've had some very good reaction to it," hospital spokeswoman Myra Joines said.

When a patient places an order, it is reviewed by staff members to make sure the patient is not on a restricted diet. The hospital says it does not charge patients extra for the service.

There is a special pediatric menu with foods like pizza and grilled cheese sandwiches.
