Researchers Appeal for Middle-Aged Women Smokers

The search is on for middle-aged women, especially cigarette smokers, to take part in a pioneering heart research programme.
The women are needed by medical experts in Cardiff who are probing the link between the bone-thinning condition osteoporosis and heart problems.
Their probe has been sparked by the availability of new drugs for osteoporosis which doctors think could have a wider use.
Heart expert Professor John Cockcroft, of the Wales Heart Research Institute, said: 'We know osteoporosis is caused by a loss of calcium from the bones, but where that calcium ends up is much less clear.
'Much of it may be taken up by blood vessels causing them to harden and calcify and increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.'
The team want to hear from women who are post-menopausal, have a family history of osteoporosis and cigarette smokers.
They also want to hear from women who have osteoporosis but receiving no treatment.
They will be offered a free bone scan to assess the thickness of their bones and an assessment of the stiffness of their arteries.
Anyone interested in taking part in the research should ring 029 2074 6736 for an appointment.
The screening process will take place between Friday, March 3 and Sunday, March 5.
