Hospital Chair Resigns

Feb. 17--The chairman of Plains Regional Medical Center's Board of Directors resigned on Wednesday after 16 years in the position, a hospital spokesman said.

"Steve Hudson did step down ... He didn't offer an official statement or anything like that," said Todd Sandman, a spokesman for PRMC's parent company, Presbyterian Healthcare Services.

Hudson could not be reached for comment.

Sandra Taylor-Sawyer, also a PRMC board member, said she knew about Hudson's resignation and had talked to him, though she declined to share details of their discussion.

"It may have been because he felt he had spent too much time on the board," she said. "When you're in a place for a long period of time, you may feel that you need to let somebody else come in with some new blood, new ideas."

Taylor-Sawyer said Hudson's career as a certified public accountant served the board well.

"His strong point ... was with the financial reports and making those kinds of decisions ... and just guiding us as far as the flow of money," she said.

Dr. Jacob Moberly, a Clovis dentist on the hospital board, said board members meet the fourth Wednesday of each month. He said he saw Hudson at their Jan. 25 meeting and again at a committee meeting related to personnel sometime last week. He did not learn of Hudson's resignation until Thursday night and said it surprised him.

Moberly said he is not aware of any hospital issues that may have led to Hudson's unexpected resignation.

PRMC was visited by state Department of Health officials on Jan. 26 as part of a regular oversight process, said Sandman, the Presbyterian spokesman. A report on that unannounced visit is expected in about two weeks, Sandman said.

The spokesman also said PRMC received accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations in September.

A January report from an accountability system sponsored by the New Mexico Hospitals & Health Systems Association showed PRMC medical services were on par with those at other New Mexico hospitals.

PRMC Administrator Brian Bentley did not return a call seeking comment.
