Khanh Hoa, 17 February: The Nha Trang Institute of Vaccine (IVAC) in central Khanh Hoa province has succeeded in developing a vaccine against bird flu virus strain H5N1 on chicken embryos in its laboratory.
Dr Le Van Hiep, IVAC Director, said his institute used the reassortant influenza strain NIBRG-14 provided by the British National Institute for Biological Standard and Control.
The first two lots of 200 doses of the H5N1 vaccine are being tested on rabbits and mice and will show final results later this month.
The IVAC plans to produce an additional 2,000 doses of the H5N1 vaccine for testing on humans within 18 months.
If the results are effective, mass production of the vaccine will begin in mid-2007.
The IVAC will be able to provide about 4m doses of the vaccine at 20,000 dong per dose, much cheaper than imported vaccines.
