Prescription Drug Abuse: An Emerging Public Health Threat
A Congressional Briefing Sponsored by The Friends of NIDA
WHEN:
Thursday, Feb. 23
Noon to 2 p.m. (Lunch will be served)
WHERE:
Rayburn House Office Building, Room B-339
DETAILS:
The inappropriate or nonmedical use of prescription medications is a serious public health concern. An estimated 48 million people aged 12 and older, or 20 percent of the U.S. population, have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons in their lifetimes. Young adults and elderly persons are particularly vulnerable to the abuse or misuse of these drugs, which include prescription pain relievers, stimulants, sedatives, and tranquilizers. Through the Clinical Trials Network, NIDA is testing medications for the treatment of prescription drug abuse and investing resources to decrease the prevalence of this health problem.
SPEAKERS:
Nora Volkow, MD, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, will provide an overview of NIDA's prescription drug abuse and treatment research portfolio.
Carol Boyd, PhD, director, Institute for Research on Women & Gender, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, will discuss results from her studies of prescription drug abuse among adolescents and college students.
"Nick" will provide his personal perspective on recovering from prescription drug addiction with the aid of a novel treatment medication developed by NIDA.
Positive RSVPs only to Sara Robinson: 202-336-5935 or srobinson(At)apa.org
